Indie Music Available at Your Library
Sometimes work and play meet in the best ways. For me, that means telling you how to get music from the library.
Most public libraries add CDs to their collections regularly. Many libraries also cooperate to lend you CDs from libraries throughout the region.
What does this mean for you? Awesome music delivered to your local library at no charge.
Coloradans and UW folks, use Prospector! Access to 23 regional library catalogs. I get tons of music here... I use it to sample new music and listen to old recordings from my favorite artists. Almost everything is here, but new stuff may take a week or two before it is processed and in the catalog.
Wyoming folks, use WYLDCat. Not as much music as Colorado, but you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Just walking through the Albany County Library I picked up a Pavement retrospective and Devendra Barnhardt. Sweet!
Seattle people, you know that Seattle Public Library and KCLS will hook you up with new music all the time. The John Richards influence is huge in this part of the country. King County libraries buy tons of movies, too.
Need help finding stuff? A couple tips:
- band name = author
- individual singer = author, last name first
- common names yielding too many results? try adding "musical group" to your search

Setting concert priorities for October
As you might guess, Laramie weather turns unpredictable this time of year. This week we went from flip-flops to boots. Last night I could smell the chimneys on my evening walk, keeping everyone cozy for the 30 degree night.
What does this have to do with music? Around about now, we Laramigos need to think carefully about what shows warrant a 2 hour drive south to Colorado in possibly (likely) crappy conditions.

Live Preview: Metric September 28th
Friday at the Bluebird, Emily Haines brings her band to Denver.
I like Metric, and heard good things about them live, but wasn't feeling the pull of this show until I read this review of their performance at Webster Hall this week:
The half-Canadian, half-American quartet have a few albums that, while good, suffer from filler. Live-wise, the filler becomes substance and the quality becomes the stuff of pure excellence. The band's 3 best songs - "Monster Hospital", "Combat Baby", and "Dead Disco" - shook the club. I mean it. The club literally shook. The crowd would have been dancing all performance long too if it wasn't for the hypnotic light show (it cannot be underplayed how perfect the lighting was) and the presence of Ms. Haines. To sum up Emily in a sentence: She's Madonna if Madonna was a talented musician.Yikes! Those of you with no Friday night plans, get to the Bluebird! Need more convincing? Of course, I'm hearing a lot of good about the Aliens at the Larimer Lounge that night, too. Let me know what you thought if you go, I'm curious!

Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem @ Red Rocks
The bill last night made me believe in a kind and all-knowing God. LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire together at Red Rocks = my dream show!
Our traveling caravan were mostly new to James Murphy's eloquence and mad beats, but they all came away loving LCD Soundsystem.
And in no surprise, Arcade Fire delivered the goods.
The light show looked brilliant against the rocks.
Haiti remains one of my favorites live.
Whenever Regine heads to the drum kit, I start to freak out in anticipation of Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).
Oh to be in the front rows! Win toured the crowd twice!
Wake Up proved transcendent and a perfect end to the evening.

Flaming Lips @ Red Rocks 9-17-07
The Flaming Lips deserve their own post, with the best visuals of Monolith. I will never guess how Wayne Coyne knew that I could use a confetti bath, let alone moments of darkness and quiet in the midst of a rock and roll show, but I send him my thanks.
