2007 Wrap-up

Cripes, I am tired of top 10 lists! That might not stop me from making some lists of my own.

Not qualified to definitively select the very best music of 2007, as I'm neither wealthy enough to obtain all the music nor a genius critic, I'll settle for some more personal lists.

After consulting itunes and my (admittedly faulty) memory, these were the albums in high rotation Chez Wyoming Beat in 2007. A fickle list, not all were released this year as I can be slow to adopt at times. Also I cannot vouch for them being the best of the year, but I can attest to each of these albums, taken as a whole, providing the right mood at the right time:

January: Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
Heartless Bastards - All This Time
M. Ward - Post-War
February: Menomena - Friend and Foe
!!! - Myth Takes
Serena Maneesh - Serena Maneesh
March: Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Bjork - Vespertine*
April: Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
May: same! Arcade Fire and LCD = my faves at this point in the year by a long shot
June: Feist - The Reminder
July: The National - Boxer
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
August: New Pornographers - Challengers
Pela - Anytown Graffiti
September: nada new due to illness
October: Cloud Cult - Meaning of 8
November: Iron & Wine - Shepherd's Dog
Okkervil River - The Stage Names
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow*
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Is Is
December: M.I.A. - Kala
Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals

*confession: when I don't like the new album, I go back to the good stuff.

2007 Lamentations: missing Daft Punk at Red Rocks, missing Menomena twice (!), lacking the oomph to see the National the day after Arcade Fire, and not being cool enough to understand Animal Collective.

Liars and Editors and Black Lips, oh my

Usually there's nothing more to do on February 1st than wait for Punxsutawney Phil to make his appearance. Not this year.

All on one night:
Liars @ Marquis Theatre
Editors @ Ogden Theater
Black Lips @ Bluebird Theater

Oh yeah, and these guys.

I am vexed.

Pela sets Denver date

Oh what great news! Pela to visit the Hi-Dive March 10th.

I was lucky to see them in NYC this summer, but since then I've spent hours and hours with their album and I cannot wait to see them live again. Tenement Teeth live! Drop Me Off! Mark your calendars! I'll be the one singing along in the front :-)

Live Preview: Kristen Schaal

Mel is coming to Denver! She probably tops the list of comedians I'd like to see... and she might just be the funniest part of the Flight of the Conchords. Please don't miss Mel's blog.

Christmas party karaoke Saturday

Trapped by snow and ice, the Wyoming music fan turns to karaoke.

What to sing at the annual Christmas bash this Saturday? I've got the following tunes waiting in the karoake server, but remain undecided about what is doable without sounding like drowning cat...

Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, I just wish more than one song was available for the karaoke:

Oh dear God, I love PJ:

This was more fun to karaoke before we were all sick of it:

I suspect Lily is harder to sing than it appears:

Live Preview: The Blakes

Another dose of the Northwest here in the great Rocky Mountain empire this week arrives via The Blakes. I don't hear much about them out here but trust me, John in the Morning loves them and so should you.

Playing at the Larimer Lounge Thursday... see them while they're fresh and cheap.

Live Preview: David Bazan

Westword tells me that David Bazan (aka Pedro the Lion) is coming to the Hi-Dive Wednesday night.

Reading the article made me realize that we are all getting older:
"What I see now — I don't know what might emerge later, but as it stands now — it's about my wife and daughter, it's about drinking, and it's about does God exist? And the umbrella I think those are all under is a funny concept nowadays, but [it's] manhood, and, basically, am I a good man? — and what that means, and how do you measure that?"
And thinking about Pedro the Lion made me miss dear flooded Seattle, and Bumbershoot, and graduate school. Thanks for the memories Mr. Bazan. How about we all go out and support some PNW sound?
