As you might guess, Laramie weather turns unpredictable this time of year. This week we went from flip-flops to boots. Last night I could smell the chimneys on my evening walk, keeping everyone cozy for the 30 degree night.
What does this have to do with music? Around about now, we Laramigos need to think carefully about what shows warrant a 2 hour drive south to Colorado in possibly (likely) crappy conditions.
So please, take a look at the list below, and tell me what I cannot miss. And what I'm forgetting.
October at the Larimer Lounge offers many pleasures:
10/1 The Little Ones
10/5 Bat for Lashes
10/9 Earl Greyhound
10/12 Dr. Dog
10/13 White Rabbits
10/19 Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter
10/20 Earlimart
10/23 Caribou
10/27 Kinski
At the Hi-Dive:
10/11 John Vanderslice w/ Bishop Allen
10/12 Matthew Dear's Big Hands w/Mobius Band
10/16 Scout Niblett
10/17 Stars of Track and Field
At the Bluebird:
10/2 Midlake
10/3 Deerhoof
10/12 Jose Gonzalez
10/16 Shout out Louds
10/19 Rogue Wave
10/23 The Pipettes
10/31 The Raveonettes
The Gothic has a nice slate:
10/2 Hot Hot Heat w/ De Novo Dahl
10/6 The Gourds
10/12 Lucero
10/22 Polyphonic Spree
10/29 Minus the Bear w/ Helio Sequence and Grand Archives
To the Ogden, I ask where are the good bands? One in a month?
10/26 Architecture in Helsinki
For Boulder shows, the Fox brings:
10/4 Klaxons w/ Hot IQs
10/13 Lucero
10/28 Menomena!
And at the Boulder Theater:
10/25 Public Enemy
10/29 and 10/30 Gogol Bordello
The Aggie in Ft. Collins:
10/22The seemingly omnipresent Aesop Rock
Next up, November... even better shows, worse weather. Sigh.
Update! I forgot the Fillmore:
10/14 Interpol w/ the Liars
10/27 Devotchka
10/28 Jesus and Mary Chain

Live Preview: Metric September 28th

Friday at the Bluebird, Emily Haines brings her band to Denver.
I like Metric, and heard good things about them live, but wasn't feeling the pull of this show until I read this review of their performance at Webster Hall this week:
The half-Canadian, half-American quartet have a few albums that, while good, suffer from filler. Live-wise, the filler becomes substance and the quality becomes the stuff of pure excellence. The band's 3 best songs - "Monster Hospital", "Combat Baby", and "Dead Disco" - shook the club. I mean it. The club literally shook. The crowd would have been dancing all performance long too if it wasn't for the hypnotic light show (it cannot be underplayed how perfect the lighting was) and the presence of Ms. Haines. To sum up Emily in a sentence: She's Madonna if Madonna was a talented musician.Yikes! Those of you with no Friday night plans, get to the Bluebird! Need more convincing? Another loving review of the Webster Hall show here.
Of course, I'm hearing a lot of good about the Aliens at the Larimer Lounge that night, too. Let me know what you thought if you go, I'm curious!

Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem @ Red Rocks
The bill last night made me believe in a kind and all-knowing God. LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire together at Red Rocks = my dream show!

Our traveling caravan were mostly new to James Murphy's eloquence and mad beats, but they all came away loving LCD Soundsystem.
And in no surprise, Arcade Fire delivered the goods.

The light show looked brilliant against the rocks.

Haiti remains one of my favorites live.

Whenever Regine heads to the drum kit, I start to freak out in anticipation of Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).

Oh to be in the front rows! Win toured the crowd twice!

Wake Up proved transcendent and a perfect end to the evening.

Flaming Lips @ Red Rocks 9-17-07
The Flaming Lips deserve their own post, with the best visuals of Monolith. I will never guess how Wayne Coyne knew that I could use a confetti bath, let alone moments of darkness and quiet in the midst of a rock and roll show, but I send him my thanks.

Monolith -- Saturday pictures
Saturday at Monolith offered the best kind of festival experience. I got a chance to see a ton of awesome bands for the first time and in a beautiful venue to boot.

The skyline reminded my co-pilot of a joke from Tad during their Red Rocks show approximately one million years ago: "Joining us, on that precipice, Richie Sambora on lead guitar!"

We started the day with Denver band The Laylights. They sounded terrific and looked quite fashionable in their vests. The generous gents followed the show by bestowing free EPs to the audience.

Having missed Bob Log III at Laramie's own Buckhorn Bar, we completely enjoyed his wayward banter and slippery guitar at Red Rocks.

After catching a short bit of the Little Ones' set, we watched Margot and the Nuclear So & So's on the main stage. What energy on the drums! And lovely songs for a sunny afternoon.

Brian Jonestown Massacre delivered a predictable meltdown. Debate ensued about whether Anton brings more rock or schtick, but when they were playing and not tuning the band sounded tight and melodic.

I came into Matt & Kim's show cynical about all the SXSW reports of their unflappable enthusiasm. Guess what? It's all true! They proved themselves truly sweet, good-natured and all around adorable, thanking the universe for bringing them to "show heaven" at Red Rocks.

None of my photos adequately demonstrate the true intensity and delight of Art Brut's live performance. Again I doubted the hype, as the album did not rock my socks, but man oh man the live show! Please, if Art Brut plays near you, buy tickets. You will not regret seeing the funniest front man touring today.

Monolith -- Friday pictures
Gearing up for another day of awesome music, but a short report... So far all of the bands have started on time (!), the bathroom lines are reasonable (!), and the sound is amazing. I've seen Ghostland and the Decemberists at other festivals, and both bands benefited yesterday from the amazing sound quality at Red Rocks.

We arrived rather early, allowing plenty of time to meander and strategerize and watch Colin Meloy take some photos of Red Rocks.

With energy to burn, a killer horn section and a shoutout to Cheyenne, local faves Everything Absent or Distorted were one of the day's favorites.

Ghostland always brings full energy to a performance. They never fail to make the cool kids dance. And again my mind wandered to Aaron's pants. Where does a person buy such tight, perfectly fit jeans? Amazing.

To Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I said "meh".

The Kings of Leon offered a tight LOUD show. This drummer amazed me by blowing bubbles and drumming at the same time. My mother likes to point out that I can't walk and chew gum.
More pics and reports from Saturday to come!
